So less than a week after returning from the UK RC Nationals in Newark, trucks ready and batteries charged, we are off again. This time to the far South West and Cornwall, Stithians Showground to be precise, and the spiritual home of truck shows in Cornwall. West Country RC Truckers Club, has a quite a following in Cornwall, and we have all have significant friendships with our members in the Duchy, many of whom also belong to Buzz Trucking, a small group based near Redruth.

Our attendance at The Truck Show Cornwall was very much a joint effort with Buzz, and we are grateful to them for the use of their layout materials and support with the setup and tear down process, and it was great to see them all in their West Country RC truckers club shirts, resplendent with the St. Piran’s flag!

Arriving to shows at Stithians has always been a bit of a ‘surprise’, not knowing what area we will have to run the layout in, historically, we were always inside a barn used for equipment storage, but it always comes right in the end. This year we knew we were in a marquee, but the finer details were unknown………. But we know Mike Quartley, the organiser of the Devon and Cornwall truck shows, never let’s us down, and this time he smashed it! A 12 x 26m marquee with a fully fitted floor, power, barriers and chairs, right in the middle of the show fields. We would just like to express our thanks to Mike and his team, nothing is ever too much trouble, and we always get what we ask for, you sir are a gentleman.

So after a little bit of thinking time, the layout started to spring to life, rubber and boards down, parking areas and yards taking shape, and in no time at all it was done.

Must be tea time, and thanks to Duncan Perryman we all sat and enjoyed our Cornish pasties, well it would have been rude not to!

With brilliant sunshine blazing down Saturday morning was upon us, and the gates opened, and the crowds appeared, with a bit of planning we had allowed a bigger viewing area with seating, so visitors could escape the heat. The trucks were running, and the crowds were entertained, we are really lucky to have some local models running, Dave James with his Dennis Oates trucks, always a crowd puller in Cornwall, and Lee Shepherd’s fire engines, modelled on the appliances based at Tolvaddon, a few miles away from the showground, and Duncan Perryman’s Scania 4 series, with Trelawny’s Army image on the rear of the cab. “Sum bleddy ‘oss, innum”.  With Allan Shilletto’s digging area located at the front of the layout, there was plenty of action, with two other digging areas operating, there was always something going on.

We tried something different, for this show, a dedicated layout for children (and adults) to drive our Mascot trucks around, well what an overwhelming success that was, so much so we were scrambling around for transmitter batteries by midday Sunday, and the Mascot trucks and some of the layout boards took a bit of a hammering, but will be all pristine and good to go for September.

Away from the marquee, the show was excellent and does have a great reputation for meeting and socialising with friends, and drivers, and now with fantastic entertainment for all the family throughout the day and into the night, with Monster trucks, truck parades, rides, evening light shows, live music and plenty of truck horns.

Come 4pm on Sunday, it is all over drivers have received their awards, the crowds have gone, and the tear down begins, and within 90 minutes, the marquee is empty, and we all bid each other goodbye.

The Committee would like to thank Mike Quartley for his invitation, Buzz Trucking for all their assistance, all of our members who made the journey to Stithians, near or far, Aaron Pricey for his first visit to Stithians, and to all the visitors that took time to visit and talk with us in the marquee.

Now for the pictures.

All that remains, is for me to say “2023……….Bring it on!”
